David Sylvian
The concert that yours truly has waited for, well, 25 years:
The few pics which david managed to take like a dumb teenage fan, like 25 years ago.
Oh well.

élégance
Enough of causeway bay lah (sorry for the Malayanglish).
Upon this once-every-16-blue-moons occasion during which david actually accompanied a friend to shopping, we were chit-chatting about "good taste," as opposed to "MK"—Mongkok, Hong Kong's more common fashion ecology.
So the story went, we strolled past this cigar shop...
where the sales lady calmly waited for business reading a magazine in a better shawl—and dress and hairdo, and shoes—than anything we saw on the street level.
The topic of discussion promptly screeched to a close, and we quietly moved on.

metta
At the Multi-faith Prayer Gathering for Peace in Burma, 2007/10/6, outside the Hong Kong City Hall (in response to the Global Day of Action for Burma):
Rev. Li Ding-xin of Hong Kong Christian Council leads a prayer
Ven. Dhammapala Bikkhu, my Sanskrit teacher, chants Metta
Metta ("compassion and loving kindness" in Pali, the Indian dialect with which the Buddha is believed to have taught) is what the Burmese monks advocate,
and is probably what was going through their minds when they were whacked by soldiers with rifle-butts, to remind themselves to never return the violence.
Download a heavenly rendition of Metta by Ms. Imee Ooi, Malaysia. (mp3)

Dignity - into the shadows
Matt Frei - Bush on Burma:
On my last visit to Burma in 1999, I was walking through the once beautiful streets of Rangoon when an elderly woman in rags sidled up to me. Her face was smeared with dirt. Her ragged clothes were disintegrating on her crippled body.
I assumed she had come to beg. But instead of an outstretched hand, she offered a greeting in perfect English.
"Forgive me for asking," she said in a whisper. "But are you from England? I apologise for my appearance. It has become so difficult to be normal and dignified in this country. Thank you for visiting. Don't forget us. Please don't."
I wanted to ask her where she had learnt her English, why she had fallen on such hard times, where she lived, what she intended to do in the future?
But the old woman, who was probably not that old at all, sidled off into the shadows.
The Burmese have borne their suffering with plenty of dignity - few more so than Aung San Suu Kyi, the opposition leader who won the general election in 1990 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.

By rights she should be Burma's leader. Instead, she is the best-known dissident alive in the world today.

Forbidden Colours
The wounds on your handsDavid Sylvian/Ryuchi Sakamoto never seem to heal. I thought all I needed was to believe... Here am I, a lifetime away from You. The Blood of Christ or the Beat of my Heart. My love wears forbidden colours. My life believes. Senseless years THUNDER by. Millions are willing to give their lives for You. D O E SN O T H I N GL I V EO N? Learning to cope with feelings aroused in me. My hands in the soil, buried inside of myself. My love wears forbidden colours. My life believes in youonce again. |
while doubting the very ground beneath me; trying to show unquestioning faith in everything. Here
am I, a lifetime a w a y from you. The Blood of Christ or a Change of Heart. My love wears forbidden colours. My life believes. My love wears forbidden colours. My life believes in you once again.
